Fort Mill is a town located in York County, South Carolina and a suburb of the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,587. Though Fort Mill is a small town, it has been the home of several nationally notable business, including Jim Bakker's defunct Heritage USA, Muzak and Springs Industries.
Nestled in the gentle rolling foothills of Piedmont, South Carolina, Fort Mill, with a population of 5,931 is the home of Springs Industries, one of the nation's largest textile manufacturing companies. Located on I-77, Fort Mill provides a safe, hometown atmosphere with easy access to the big-city benefits of Charlotte, NC only 15 miles to the north. With an average annual temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit, a January average of 40.5 degrees Fahrenheit and a July average of 78.5 degrees Fahrenheit, the climate allows the enjoyment of all of the four seasons without the extremes of heat and cold. Fort Mill is blessed to be located so close to so many diversified activities and attractions. The Charlotte Hornets, the Carolina Panthers and NASCAR racing are all only 15 miles away in Charlotte. In only three hours by car you can be strolling the beautiful beaches along the East Coast of South Carolina or taking in the splendor of the mountains of western North and South Carolina. If golf is your passion, the mild weather and preponderance of excellent golf courses in both North and South Carolina is a dream come true. Boaters can ply the spacious waters of Lake Wylie nearly year round and the whole family can enjoy Carowinds, a 100-acre water and theme park. For those who cherish the outdoors, the Anne Springs Close Greenway is a 2,000+ acre undeveloped area north of Fort Mill. Twenty-six miles of hiking, horseback and bicycle trails weave through the diverse area, providing scenes of natural beauty and wildlife habitat.
